il tour d’arance

LA VIA DELL’ARANCIA ROSSA

Ludwigsburg, December 2017, a day like any other in Alessandro’s small delicatessen. Everything seemed normal until that moment when the caretaker of the nearby shopping centre dropped in for lunch. He was accompanied by Giuseppe from Sicily. Alessandro exchanged a few words in Italian with him, and lo and behold, it turns out that Giuseppe is an orange farmer near Catania, the city at the foot of Mount Etna in eastern Sicily. The most important content of the first conversation was: “Coltivi arance moro?” – “Si!” – “Biologico?” – “Si!” (“Do you cultivate moro oranges?” – “Yes!” – “Organic?” – “Yes!”). And thus, the foundation was laid for the purchasing of wonderful Sicilian blood oranges for the gin of our dreams.

HISTORIC CATANIA

In February 2019, we made our way to Catania for the first time. The historic buildings and the Boulevard Via Etnea, where our apartment was located, captivated us from the very first minute.

THE ACTIVE ETNA

The view from the window was not directly of Mount Etna, but we were able to check after getting up whether it had a column of smoke above the crater or not. And it had! A very unusual feeling for us Sicily newcomers. This image was taken in January 2021 when the volcano was extremely active.

BREAKFAST VIEW

On the way to Giuseppe we stopped briefly at a small pastry shop to drink good cappuccino and eat the typical Cornetti con Créma. A day has to start like this, otherwise it won’t be a good day.

OFF TO THE ORANGE JUNGLE

“Cielo di arrance” (Sky of Arrance) was our first thought when Giuseppe guided us through his organic plantation. He explained to us the irrigation, the benefits of cultivation on the fertile volcanic soil and the “secrets” behind the red colouring of the blood orange.

INGRESSO DI CASA SATOSHI

Looking at the facades of Catania, you wonder at the beautiful materials, design skills and pomp behind them. You could produce your own photo book based just on the entrances to apartment buildings alone.

ANTHOCYANIN PLANT DYE

The Anthocyanins contained in the fruit and peel are responsible for the colouring of blood oranges, as these are natural plant dyes that react to changing weather conditions – frost and sun are ideal.

Let’s do it again!

CATANIA, WE LOVE YOU!

In February 2020, we made our way back to Catania to visit La Famiglia and possibly find even better blood oranges. We found everything from large organic certified farms to the smallest plantations far away from all other growing areas, but found no better blood oranges than Giuseppe’s. We learned a lot about the cultivation of oranges and the different approaches to cultivation. It is most satisfying to know that the main raw material of our distillates is carefully looked after, from flower to fruit.

Fancy Sicily in a glass?

SATOSHI GIN WITH SICILIAN BLOOD ORANGE!

We knew from the beginning that it would be an extremely difficult task to distil a blood orange-tasting London Dry Gin – the gin category that does not allow tricks with artificial flavours, sugars or blending after distillation. In addition, there is the natural limitation, as the blood orange harvest in Sicily only allows a yield once a year. However, all these aspects make working with this fruit wonderfully exciting.
